A Farewell on the Platform

On the way home after work, Mio sees a quiet farewell on a railway platform. One person remains behind while another disappears inside a departing train. It is an ordinary scene between strangers, seen only for a few seconds before the station moves on.

The Story

A train begins to move. Someone stays behind.

The shift was over.

Outside the kitchen, the city had already settled into its evening rhythm.
Station lights reflected across windows.
Announcements repeated above the sound of footsteps and trains.

Mio waited on the platform with everyone else.

People checked their phones.
Someone adjusted a bag on their shoulder.
A few passengers stepped closer as the departure time approached.

Then she noticed someone farther down the platform.

They were standing still beside the moving crowd, looking toward a train that had just begun to leave.

One hand was raised.

Not high.
Not dramatically.
Just enough to be seen through the window.

Someone inside the train seemed to answer.

The train continued forward.

Slowly at first.
Then faster.
Until the window, the raised hand, and the person beyond it could no longer share the same moment.

The person on the platform lowered their arm.

And that was all.

No dramatic farewell.
No words Mio could hear.
No reason for the scene to matter to her.

Yet she kept looking in the direction the train had gone.

Around her, the station returned immediately to normal.
Another announcement played.
Another train would come.

Mio did not try to give the moment a meaning.

She simply carried it with her, one small image from the journey home that somehow refused to disappear.

About This Work

A farewell seen from the other side of the platform.

PRIVATE HOURS follows Mio through the ordinary time that belongs to her outside work.

This work takes place on a station platform during her journey home. Nothing unusual happens, and Mio is not part of the farewell she witnesses.

She simply happens to be there when a train begins to leave.

One person stands on the platform.
Someone else is inside the train.
A hand is raised as the distance between them grows.

For the people involved, the moment may carry an entire story. For Mio, it is only something seen in passing.

The station quickly returns to its usual rhythm. Other passengers move, another announcement begins, and another train will arrive.

This work leaves the scene exactly there — as one small event from an ordinary evening away from work.

PRIVATE HOURS
