Someone leaves the kitchen. Someone else will eventually arrive. Work continues between those moments, almost unchanged. In Mio’s sleep, that quiet rhythm of farewell and arrival becomes a dream where the hotel kitchen and a railway platform merge into one.
People leave. People arrive. The work goes on.
Someone in the kitchen was leaving.
There had been the usual words.
A few practical conversations.
Small signs that a familiar presence would soon no longer be there.
Work did not stop because of it.
Orders still came in.
Stainless-steel counters still had to be cleaned.
Tomorrow’s preparation still had to be done.
The kitchen continued almost exactly as before.
On the way home, Mio saw someone at a railway station waving toward a departing train.
It was only a brief scene.
A person on the platform.
A hand raised in farewell.
A train beginning to move away.
But the image stayed with her.
That night, after the shift had ended, the two memories quietly became one.
The kitchen appeared first.
The same worktables.
The same cooking equipment.
The same reflective floor.
Then a platform began to stretch through it.
Yellow safety lines appeared beside stainless steel.
Kitchen lights became station lights.
Steam from cooking drifted like mist around a waiting train.
Someone was leaving.
Mio was there to see them off.
Yet behind that departure, another train seemed to be approaching from the distance.
Because a workplace is never made only of the people who are there now.
Someone leaves.
Someone new arrives.
And between those changes, the work continues.
The dream did not turn the kitchen into a station.
It revealed what the kitchen had quietly become in Mio’s mind — a platform where people meet, work beside one another, say goodbye, and one day welcome someone new.
Departures and arrivals from the same dream.
Different moments from the same imagined platform.
A farewell, an empty interval, and the quiet possibility of someone new arriving.
A workplace is also a platform.
People arrive, stay for a while, and leave.
The idea behind this work is not simply to place a train platform inside a kitchen.
The kitchen represents continuity. Even when someone leaves, the next service comes, preparation continues, and the same workplace opens again the following day.
The railway platform represents change.
Someone departs.
Someone stays behind and watches.
Somewhere else, another arrival is already on its way.
In ordinary life, these events happen separately.
A coworker resigns.
A stranger waves goodbye at a station.
Weeks later, a new employee joins the kitchen.
In the dream, those separate memories become one landscape.
Stainless-steel counters become part of a platform.
Kitchen lights overlap with station lights.
Steam and railway mist share the same air.
The result is a visual metaphor for a workplace: a place that appears unchanged, even while the people passing through it are always changing.
