The Shift Labyrinth — Mio walking through a surreal labyrinth formed from a hotel kitchen work schedule
The Story

The days she had only traced with one finger now stretched farther than she could see.

Earlier that day, Mio had stood in front of the new monthly schedule.

Early shift.
Early shift.
Regular shift.
Late shift.
Another late shift.

She had followed the row beside her name with one finger, checking how the coming month had been divided.

There were days that would begin before sunrise.
Days that would continue late into the evening.
Several working days connected together.
And somewhere between them, one empty square.

A day off.

She had looked at it for only a few seconds.

Then someone called her name, and she returned to the stainless-steel counter.

The shift continued.

The schedule stayed on the wall.

But that night, the grid returned.

At first, Mio thought she was standing in the hotel kitchen.

The stainless-steel counters were there.
The shelves were there.
The commercial ovens were there.
The white lights above her looked almost exactly as they did during work.

Something underneath her feet was different.

Mio looked down.

The kitchen floor had been divided into squares.

Long straight lines crossed one another beneath the counters, forming a grid that continued through the entire room.

She recognized it immediately.

The schedule.

The same rows.

The same columns.

Only now, each square was large enough for her to stand inside.

Mio took a step forward.

A wall rose quietly from the line beside her.

Another appeared farther ahead.

Then another.

Stainless steel stretched upward, higher than any preparation counter, until the familiar grid had become a corridor.

Mio turned around.

The kitchen behind her had changed too.

Counters had become boundaries.
Shelves had become high walls.
Narrow passages continued between dates that no longer looked small.

The monthly schedule had become a labyrinth.

Mio began walking.

The first corridor was filled with pale blue light.

Somewhere above her, an enormous clock showed a time before sunrise.

The air felt cool.
The kitchen was almost silent.
Far ahead, lights switched on one after another.

She knew this place.

An early shift.

The hour when the city was still dark, but breakfast preparation had already begun.

At the next intersection, the color changed.

Warm kitchen lights.
Orange reflections.
Distant voices.
Plates moving somewhere beyond the walls.

A late shift.

Service had already been moving for hours, and somewhere beyond the corridor, the night outside the hotel was growing deeper.

Mio kept walking.

Another corner.

Another corridor.

Another shift.

Early.
Regular.
Late.
Early again.

The pattern began to repeat.

She passed the same stainless-steel counter twice.

Then three times.

A stack of containers appeared at one corner.
A row of knives appeared at another.
Somewhere farther away, a timer sounded.

Mio stopped.

Had she already been here?

She looked behind her.

The corridor had rearranged itself.

The squares were moving.

Days slid sideways.
Rows stretched longer.
Working days connected themselves into new passages.

One shift became another.
One corridor opened into the next.
The end of one working day became the entrance to another.

Consecutive shifts.

On paper, they had been nothing more than several marks placed beside one another.

Here, they had become a road with no visible end.

Mio continued.

She was not frightened.

But the labyrinth felt much larger than the kitchen she knew.

Her working days had become architecture.
Hours had become distance.
A schedule had become somewhere she could physically walk.

Then she noticed something unusual ahead.

A white square.

No wall stood around it.

No counter crossed it.

No clock hung above it.

No voice came from inside.

Mio walked toward it.

The closer she came, the quieter the labyrinth became.

The sound of plates disappeared.
The timers stopped.
The distant kitchen voices faded.

The square remained empty.

Mio remembered.

The day off.

She stepped closer.

Inside the square there was no kitchen.

No assigned station.

No starting time.

No finishing time.

Only light.

Mio stood at the edge for a moment.

Behind her stretched early shifts, late shifts, regular shifts, long connected corridors of working days.

In front of her was one square containing nothing.

And because it contained nothing, it could become anything.

Mio smiled slightly.

Then she stepped inside.

The walls began to fall away.

The grid loosened.
The stainless-steel corridors became transparent.
The clocks above the maze disappeared one after another.

The entire labyrinth opened toward a sky that had not been there before.

Mio looked upward.

For the first time in the dream, there was no next square waiting for her.

No mark telling her where she needed to be.

No line telling her which direction to follow.

Only an open space.

And somewhere inside it, a day that had not yet been decided.

About This Work

A schedule becomes a place made from time.

This work begins with one of the most ordinary objects in working life: a monthly schedule.

During ON SHIFT, Mio reads that schedule practically. Early shifts determine mornings. Late shifts shape evenings. Consecutive working days connect one part of the month to another, while days off create small spaces between them.

None of that is unusual. The schedule is simply one of the systems that allows a hotel kitchen to operate across breakfast, preparation, restaurant service, banquets, cleaning and the many hours between them.

MIDNIGHT FANTASY transforms that practical system into physical space.

The grid becomes architecture. Shift marks become corridors. Working hours become distance. Repeating days become paths that turn back toward themselves.

The dream is therefore not only about being lost inside a maze.

It is about seeing time from a different perspective. On paper, a month can be viewed all at once. When it is lived, however, each square must be entered one day at a time.

The most important place in the labyrinth is the only square that contains nothing.

Mio's day off has no assigned task, no starting time and no required destination. In the dream, that absence becomes something larger than the other squares: possibility.

The maze is created from the days already decided. The open space begins where nothing has been decided yet.

MIDNIGHT FANTASY
