Before the shift begins, spring appears quietly along Mio’s usual route to work. A row of cherry trees, petals moving in the morning air, and a few extra seconds spent looking up turn an ordinary commute into a small seasonal memory.
Spring was already there before work began.
Mio took the same route to work as usual.
The same station.
The same streets.
The same morning rhythm she barely had to think about anymore.
But that morning, something along the way had changed.
The cherry trees had begun to bloom. Pale petals gathered above the sidewalk, softening a route that usually passed by unnoticed.
She did not stop for long.
A glance upward.
A slower step.
A few petals carried across the path by a light spring wind.
There was still a shift waiting for her.
Uniform.
Preparation.
Orders.
The familiar pace of the kitchen.
So she kept walking.
The scene was ordinary enough to disappear from thought almost immediately. There was no reason to remember it as anything special.
Still, something about the morning stayed with her.
The pale color above the street.
The air that felt slightly warmer than the week before.
The brief sense that the season had changed while everyday life continued exactly as usual.
Then the entrance to work came into view.
Mio stepped inside, and the quiet spring morning gave way to the rhythm of the day.
Small moments from the same spring morning.
Different views from the same commute.
A familiar street, cherry blossoms overhead, and a quiet pause before the working day begins.
An ordinary commute, changed only by the season.
This work stays within the everyday world of PRIVATE HOURS.
Nothing extraordinary happens. Mio is simply on her way to work when she notices that cherry blossoms have begun to open along a familiar route.
The scene is intentionally small. It is not presented as an important event, but as the kind of seasonal impression that can quietly remain inside an otherwise ordinary day.
PRIVATE HOURS is not only about time spent at home or in private rooms. It also includes the everyday spaces that belong to Mio when she is outside her professional role: streets, stations, shops, trains, and the moments between destinations.
Here, spring is experienced before the kitchen appears at all. A few blossoms, softer light, and slightly warmer air are enough to make the morning feel different.
The work ends before any larger meaning is explained. It is simply one small piece of a day that will later connect with other moments elsewhere in AFTER SHIFT.
PRIVATE HOURS
AFTER SHIFT
The same spring, seen somewhere else.
Other works from the same day carry different pieces of the season.
